Sometimes a little guidance can make all the
difference.

in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the State of
Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

BUSINESS VENTURES
Starting and running a business is a part of the American Dream for many people. It can be rewarding both
financially and personally. And, because it’s your business, it’s important that it be navigated carefully through
the legal channels that govern either for-profit or non-profit enterprises. Whether it’s deciding what type of
business entity to form, negotiating contracts, or dealing with legal issues as they arise, a business leader needs
someone versed in the law to evaluate the situation and provide guidance.
(See “The One Thing You Absolutely, Positively Don’t Want to Do When You Begin a Business Venture with
Someone.”)
CYBERLAW
The Digital age in which we now live started out on shaky legal ground when the judicial system first began to
wrestle with the issues that were spawned by the “Cyber World.” Courts and legislatures didn’t fully
understand how it all worked and tried desperately to shoehorn computer and Internet issues into old laws that
didn’t really work well for the special circumstances of digital media. Now new laws have emerged specifically
governing digital technology and the Internet. But, in many ways, this is still a virtual frontier with new legal
issues and dilemmas popping up every day. Knowing what the law currently says is vital for anyone who works
with computers, digital media, or the Internet.
ESTATE PLANNING
Nothing is more important to the well being of your loved ones than creating a will or trust to attend to your
wishes for the distribution of your assets after you're gone. Estate planning can be easy, and it can save your
heirs time, energy, and possibly even thousands of dollars later. It's the last act of kindness you can do for the
people you love.
FINE ARTS & THE MEDIA
People who work in the fine arts or in mass media have a special set of circumstances that involve special legal
considerations. Issues involving such things as freedom of speech, copyright, trademark, defamation, and
rights of publicity/privacy frequently arise in these fields. In addition to practicing law, Richard Amada is also
an author, artist, and former award-winning journalist who understands the nature of these uniquely creative
professions and the laws that typically apply to them. He has written a book on the topic, titled An Artist's
Guide to the Law. He also authors The Artful Jurist law blog.
(Richard Amada is available for lecturing on such topics as copyright, trademark, media law, First Amendment
issues, fair use issues, and slander/libel. )
LITIGATION
Nobody plans on being sued. But it happens all the time anyway. Deals go sour. People get injured. Property
gets damaged. Promises get broken. And, when they do, regardless of which side you’re on, you’re strongly
urged to contact an attorney before taking any action on your own to assess your legal standing and discuss
what can be done.
